I ASKED THE KIDS AT GIRGARRE PRIMARY SCHOOL what I am doing here: it was decided I am here to teach music, and to make instruments out of junk, and to make a 'musical fence' on the boundary between the school and the recreation reserve.
I asked the kids to imagine what a musical fence is, and to draw it. The designs and ideas are on display in the gallery to the right - they are just wonderful!
Since then we have been looking at how instruments work - vibration, resonators, choice of sticks and mallets, and how best to support objects so that they can ring.
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT
Prototype instruments are being developed and trialled in the Music Supermarket, and the design think-tank is ongoing in the school art room and on the playground. Final design will be on display for comment by neighbours, staff, parents and the community.
HOW YOU CAN GET INVOLVED
When the time comes to fabricate and build there will be a call-out for assistance co-ordinated through the school and mirrored here at this blog.
I wanted us to play these drums but..
(this use of the drums is no longer allowed - with good reason..!)
