The Exquisite Now
Commissioned by Museums Victoria...
Museums Victoria are the custodians of the Federation Handbells. I have had a long association with the bells and am thrilled to be writing The Exquisite Now for performance next May. They write:
"The Exquisite Now is a new, and potentially ongoing, composition. It is inspired by a combination of ideas involving the rondo musical form and the ‘exquisite corpse’ visual art form. We have invited Graeme Leak to create a 3 or 4 minute refrain for the Federation Handbells and then a 3 or 4 minute musical base upon which other groups (schools for this incarnation but potentially community groups or professional artists as well in the future) can compose a musical response, to create a link in the ‘rondo chain’. This means groups could work independently, to compose their sections and learn the refrain, and then be brought together to perform the piece as a whole." (Susan Bamford-Caleo)

..performed in a unique gathering as part of the Arts Learning Festival 2019
I am writing a theme and a base, to be performed on sets of Federation Handbells, which will be learned by classroom groups. These groups will then compose a response, and in May we bring everyone together to put together our Exquisite Now. Find out more at the Arts Learning Website
The Federation Handbells are managed by Museums Victoria on behalf of Creative Victoria
