The Jingling Johnny, or Turkish Crescent, is a unique instrument that has a fantastic history. Known in Europe since the 16th century and gathering interest during the 18th century as part of Turkish Janissary bands, you can read more about it here.
The Scottish Chamber Orchestra needed a Jingling Johnny and commissioned me to make them one.
The main bell and bottom crescent were salvaged from a junked French Horn; the bottom jingles are a combination of teaspoons and bottle tops; the top crescent is a piece of Charity Shop costume jewellery, and the pink glitter is courtesy of HollyandTed.
The instrument was created in my Scotland studio and completed in June 2018.
