NOTES ON SOUND DESIGN
For this production I have designed a complete stage rig that includes a small PA and two amplified sound tables using contact microphones. These were developed after some exploratory days earlier this year. H&T wanted to create as much of the sound for the show live as possible, so we decided on using amplified surfaces as they open a world of microscopic sounds (and are relatively free of feedback issues on the gig). Taped atmospheres have also been developed to locate the action in the past, the present and the space-age future. All cues are operated from stage by H&T using a wireless connection to an offstage digital mixer. The entire rig fits into two suitcases that travel easily in Holly's Ford Focus.
Holly and Ted write:
Following a tough 2016 Holly&Ted explore the effect of violent language in casual conversations, on a journey that takes them back 75 million years, into outer space and back to school.
Watched over by the glittering eyes of Polaris, The Fixed Star, this story will transport you to worlds that are so different and not-so-different from our own and cast an objective, omniscient gaze over the universe and all that the star’s light has touched, Including Dinosaurs, spacewomen and a few characters a little closer to home too...
Polaris is a reaction to violent language in everyday life, put under the microscope and made fantastic.
Polaris features a unique ever-changing soundscape created live on stage by the performers utilising a timeless and eccentric array of found instrumentation.
